Memorable Rides – 2014

  • by

Another year of cycling is coming to a close. In retrospect, it was a great year with many adventures and making some fantastic new friends. The year
provided the opportunity to train in some really exotic locations including Scottsdale AZ, Sedona AZ, Outer Banks NC, Southport NC, Savannah GA, Athens GA, Warner Robins GA, Huntsville AL and San Diego CA. The riding and racing offered some new experiences and also saw one event ride off into the sunset.

Even the ride up Mt. Weather seemed easier and more pleasant than in past years. There was plenty of climbing in 2014. It all started with some training in Arizona in March, with a side trip to Sedona, where I had the opportunity to ride out of Sedona and cross over the Mingus Mountains near Jerome, AZ. Got a sense of altitude and extended climbing. The Race Across America saw some epic ascents including the climb into Durango, which was just the beginning of the Rockies. Unfortunately the team could not continue due to Gino having some medical issues, but it was still a classic race, while it lasted

2014 allowed me to connect with some great groups. The Spring City Cycling Club out of Huntsville, AL was especially accommodating and friendly. The have some excellent riding, albeit with not much climbing. Actually it was hardly any climbing. A few rollers and then the climb over the interstate. The speed in some of the group rides was insane, but great to keep the legs moving. Riding in Alabama also provided me with something I have never seen. Miles and miles of cotton fields in full bloom. It was one of the prettiest sights that I have ever seen. The photo to the left doesn’t do the image justice, but trust me, that you had to be there to see it.

Livestrong 2014 was another great event, where we had over 30 participants. Team Lewis continues to inspire many and 2015 will lead us to new heights as we explore new options to carry on the Drew Lewis vision. Still miss him dearly, but oh how proud he would be.

As I write this, the temperature is 19 degrees and it looks like its time to hit the indoor training for some base training for next year. Thanks to my German cycling friends, they have hooked me up with some excellent videos to keep up the spirits and keep me motivated as we cycle through Mallorca. I will continue to post some of the EPIC adventures of 2014
